Mother Tongue Poetry Project

 ✍🏼  Feeling creative? Bilingual? 🤓

Can you create a poem in your home language?

Even if you can't write yet in Polish, Urdu, Cantonese, Arabic, Portuguese etc you could still create a poem in your home language. Your family could help you with spelling, grammar and writing down your ideas. You could write a poem about anything you want: your family, your pet, a flower, your favourite memory, an issue like inequality or global warming. What ever inspires you!

The Renfrewshire EAL team are going to collect poems from children in all our schools and in lots of different languages. We hope you'll join in.

Get creative and send me your poem to

gw17cunninghamruth@glow.sch.uk  or ruth.cunningham@renfrewshire.school

  1. Poems should be written in home language (handwritten or typed text)
  2. Pupils must be able to say or read poem out loud.
  3. The poems must be original and created from child’s ideas (but adults can help with writing, spelling and grammar)
  4. The poems can be about anything and no longer than one page.
  5. You do not need to translate the poem, but we would like you to say what it is about and why you chose to write it. (You can write this below the poem or on a separate paper)
  6. Please add an illustration or picture

The poems will be used to make a book.  There may be some prizes but every child who enters will receive a certificate and posted on here!

I cannot wait to read your poems! Miss Ruth
